Lockington's Everyday Fiji ... Life Goes On

Allen Lockington is a self-employed customs agent and business consultant who has regular articles published in Fiji. I thank Allen for permission to reprint some of them in this political blog. They remind us that life goes on, whatever the political situation. And it's good to know that.

                          Bank Pull Out

What a pity that “our bank”, the Bank of the South Pacific will be closing its doors in Levuka. We have been told that the EFTPOS facility will still be available but what about other services like loans, queries about accounts, cash deposits and other services that are offered by the bank. Where can cash deposits be made?

My relatives were ecstatic when the bank opened up over there especially when I am told that they went to villages and got five dollars from many children to open an account, but now they are gonna leave, what about the promise of your bank for life.

But is this an indication of life in Levuka, that a bank can no longer sustain itself because of the down turn of business which has affected the spending power of the people.

Furthermore, we just had some information that the North is weak despite the Look North policy.  Can someone tell us about the economy in Levuka, how are the people  doing?

I am also told that the daily  air service has been cut to only a few a week. When I was stationed in Levuka, business was thriving with PAFCO in full swing, what happened? And what about the World Heritage issue, has Levuka been confirmed part if it?

I’m sure BSP and the airlines will have explanations, and I bet many would like to really know the truth, because peoples lives depend on them.

No doubt the bank has based its decision on research. Most likely there is room for only one international bank in Levuka and Westpac is still there. Some will just have to make the hard but necessary decision to change to Westpac. Meanwhile, thanks to modern technology some of us can still send money to our relatives in Levuka through the ATM.
