(o) Are Our Feminists Being Used?

A Reader Comments

"Regarding your commentary on Amnesty International New Zealand's award to Shamima: I thought I'd forward you something from the International Center on Non-Violent Conflict website.  I joined the forum in February; posts come at least once a month, and this is the first 'front page' story they've devoted to Oceania, and Shamima's award leads the posting. [They had received it from the extreme anti-Bainimarama blog Raw Fiji News!]

"The award reminds me of Condoleeza Rice's award to [anti-Bainimarama activist]  Virisila Buadromo a couple of years ago.

"I certainly have problems with Bainimarama's regime, but I also worry when a country's feminists and women activists are clearly being used by outside organizations and agents to undermine constructive civic engagement and conflict resolution at home."

They are quite happy being used - it would appear. Not one self-actualised woman among them. Have they no self esteem, no awareness of the importance of being seen to be independent of outside manipulation and 'Sugar Daddy' pull? It appears not. So God Help the Women of the Pacific! Still in thrall and all too enthralled by the lure of baited sweets and cake.

"Speak the Truth to Power". This was said by Kumi Naidoo, GREENPEACE Executive Director from Amsterdam on CNN in an interview with Becky Anderson. How can one 'Speak the Truth to Power' - if the powers that be pay one, pull the strings which motivate one and even direct the direction in which to move forward? Kumi Naidoo is a South African and he uses language and ideas as does President Obama: smartly. He is also to ably expose vested interests and transparently hang them out on the line. Are Fiji NGOs prepared to do this? Have they done this in the recent past - say twenty years? Some of our NGOs are part of our problem. They are often used and even infiltrated. Attempts to do just this have been seen to take place: crude and rude.

Raw Fij inews is the most racist, hatful and inaccurate blog out there. If anyone is using postings from there than they obviously lack credibility!

I'm sick of all these feminist types drawing big salaries from soft-left funding bodies abroad to spread their own particular message of gloom in Fiji. Someone told me on the weekend that the patron saint of the Suva sisterhood, Adi Imrana Tuisolia, is currently in Ethiopia dispensing her particular brand of good cheer. She'd do us all a massive favour by staying there. With a bit of luck, some of her shrill acolytes currently enjoying the hospitality of the Danes on their climate change freebees will discover love in a cold climate and spare us the gruesome prospect of their return.
